Brown University’s original, founding mission was to let students study what they wanted, to the depth they wanted, without taking other “prescribed” classes. This still holds true today, since there are no core requirements. Students identify courses in conjunction with their advisors and design their own concentration.
Students who love Brown University truly love it. The admission process is rigorous as are the classes. The educational philosophy appeals to these free-thinking, idealistic students who are also extraordinarily bright. Brown’s mission requires that students chart their own education.
At Brown the faculty expects students to learn from each other and bring new information to the class. In fact, there is a sense that Brown University is relying on its students to be the trailblazers who will move the common body of knowledge forward. Students here are self directed to the “nth” degree. They are referred to as Brown’s primary resource.
