Brown University’s original, founding mission was to let students study what they wanted, to the depth they wanted, without taking other “prescribed” classes. Many of the Brown buildings retain the look and feel of the late 1800s and Brown undergraduates like New England’s old customs and ways, reminiscent of England which they have likely visited. The city of Providence provides a sophisticated and lively environment for Brown students. It’s like a mini-Boston minus the hustle and bustle of a large city. City streets like Thayer run through the university area and offer interesting diversions in an eclectic atmosphere. There’s a one screen movie theatre which often runs foreign language films, many recently released from the Cannes film festival. There are internet cafes, ethnic restaurants and street musicians in good weather. Continue reading
